Supreme Spiritual Council Convenes in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin

On April 7, 2010, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians presided during the meeting of the Supreme Spiritual Council convened in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.
On the agenda were a series of items concerning intra and inter Church issues.
His Holiness informed the members of the Council about recent appointments.
His Eminence Archbishop Mesrob Krikorian, Pontifical Legate of Central Europe and Sweden will be retiring on June 1, 2010. By Pontifical Order, Very Rev. Fr. Haigazoun Najarian will serve as a Pontifical Legate of Central Europe and Sweden (residence Vienna, Austria) commencing June 1, 2010. Fr. Haigazoun is now serving as the Vicar General of the Eastern Diocese of America.
By Pontifical Order, His Eminence Archbishop Ararat Kaltakjian was released from his responsibilities as Grand Sacristan of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and he would be appointed to another service in the near future.
His Holiness also informed the council that on April 18, Episcopal ordinations would be held in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Rev. Fr. Artak Tigranian, Dean of the Monasteries of the Mother See, Rev. Fr. Mkrtich Proshian, Locum Tenens of the Aragatsotn Diocese and Rev. Fr. Hovakim Manukian, Director of the Inter-Church Relations Department of the Mother See will receive Episcopal ranks. The Armenian Pontiff introduced the three candidates for episcopacy, stressing the importance of the responsibility.
The Council was presented with reports from inter-church organizations to which the Mother See is a member.
His Eminence Archbishop Yeznik Petrosian, General Secretary for Inter-church Relations of the Armenian Church, who serves as President of the Council of the Bible Society, reported on the activities of the Society in Armenia. His Eminence detailed the projects and programs completed in 2009, and future projects. He placed emphasis on four main projects:
1. “Walking Bible”, through which spiritual literature is offered in the border villages, and the Gospel is presented through theatrical performances
2. “Holy Bible – to the soldiers of the Republic of Armenia”, through which 10,000 Gospels are presented to the soldiers serving in the armed forces of Armenia
3. Publication of the Armenian Braille Bible
4. Preparation of the Bible original text in Classical Armenian
Rev. Fr. Paruyr Avetisian, who represents the Armenian Church on the Jinishian Foundation, presented their report. Since 1999 the Foundation has been regularly contributing to the organization of Summer Camps. The children of the Youth Center of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the children of needy families from remote regions of Armenia attend these camps every summer. Since 2006, in cooperation with the Dioceses of Gougark, Siunik, Gegharkounik and Armavir, the project titled “Spiritual Education for Children” has been implemented, supporting the spiritual education of children.
Dr. Karen Nazarian, Executive Director of the Armenia Round Table Foundation of the World Council of Churches introduced the programs of the foundation. The Foundation is focusing on 4 areas: Integrated Community Development and Social Diaconia (by establishing social centers in the Regions of Shirak, Gegharkounik and Tavush); Capacity Building projects and social activities; Promoting Dialogue for Regional Reconciliation; and publication of educational materials.
Mr. Tigran Hovhannisian, Director of the Ecumenical Church Loan Fund Foundation (ECLOF) reported on the present activities of the Foundation. The Foundation is implementing programs in 146 communities in 8 Regions with the goal of supporting the development of rural economy, promotion of job creation and improvement of social conditions for the local residents.
The members of the Council expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the Inter-Church organizations acting under the auspices of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, for their wide variety of social services, and wished them continued success in their activities for the welfare and reinforcement of the nation and the Homeland.
At the conclusion of the meeting, His Eminence Archbishop Yeznik Petrosian, General Secretary of the Inter-Church Department of the Armenian Church reported that in June, the Pontiff of All Armenians would pay an official visit to Illia II of Georgia, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia and the spiritual leader of the Georgian Orthodox Church. His Holiness will also pay a Pontifical visit to the Armenian Diocese of Georgia and the regions of Tbilisi and Javakh.
The Pontiff of All Armenians closed the meeting with blessings and Prayer.
