Russian Church urges State to Finance its work with Compatriots Abroad
Moscow, June 26, Interfax – The Moscow Patriarchate says its parishes abroad are short of funds for cultural and social work and asks the state authorities for support.
“Thanks God, today the state assigns some means to support compatriots (abroad – IF). Though parishes carry out the most extensive real work in this field, the most difficult thing for them is to get support for certain concrete activities,” deputy chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations Archpriest Georgy Ryabykh told Interfax-Religion on Friday.
According to him, the only reason is “discriminatingly interpreted principle of state secularity.” The priest noted that religious organizations such as parishes and dioceses “cannot receive money from state.”
“However, we don’t mean expenses for liturgical activities, though there’s no harm in doing so as these are spiritual needs of our compatriots. Here we mean first of all cultural, educational and social activities of parishes useful for many people,” Fr. Georgy said.
