Friday, June 11th, 7:30 PM
His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios, primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America
Greek philosophy and culture have left an indelible mark on Orthodox Christianity, in all of its theological, liturgical, and artistic expressions, as well as on the churches and their interrelationships.
At this symposium, we will examine the topic “Hellenism and Orthodoxy” broadly, in terms of time and place. We will analyze the role of Hellenistic culture in the spread of the early Christianity and look at how Hellenistic thought influenced and contrasted with the biblical Scriptures. We will see how Hellenistic philosophy and categories were used and recast in patristic thought.
We will explore further ramifications of Hellenism, noting its lasting and profound effects on the cultural, linguistic, and canonical history of the Orthodox Church. In so doing, we hope to contribute to the ongoing discussion about Orthodoxy in North America, and to facilitate greater understanding and cooperation among Orthodox Christians on this continent.
His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America and exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, will deliver the keynote address for the symposium at 7:30 PM on Friday, June 11. His talk is free and open to the public. Additionally, the symposium will assemble speakers who are among the most qualified in the world to take part in this searching discussion.
Come and explore a topic whose “roots and shoots” affect all Orthodox Christians, both in North America and globally. Participants must register for the three-day symposium and pre-pay fees. Accommodations are available both on- and off-campus.
Please view the full schedule of the symposium and join us as we investigate the Hellenistic world of the first Christians, and its lasting impact on 21st-century Orthodox Christians. See all of our summer programs being offered in June 2010, under the “Upcoming Events” heading on our Home Page.
