Summer Academic Program@ St Vladimir Seminary
St Vladimir Orthodox Theological Seminary
June 13–19, 2010
“From Gospel to Creed”
Course Details & Registration
Course description
The course will examine the evolution of the Nicene Creed—the “pattern of sound words” that originated in the early Christian community and comprised the apostolic “canon of truth” and eventually crystallized into the Church’s statement of faith. The course will demonstrate how the creedal formula is grounded in the apostolic proclamation of the gospel and how it continues to articulate the basic elements of the Christian faith.
The course also will investigate the connection between the Nicene Creed and the person of Jesus Christ and his relationship to God and the Spirit, and will explain the place of the creed within the broader framework of Scripture and church tradition.
Students will closely study the first Christian writers after the apostles and evangelists—such as St Ignatius of Antioch and St Polycarp of Smyrna—and famed saints who played major roles in the expression of Orthodox theology, such as St Athanasius the Great. Students will proceed through the course via a combination of lecture, discussion, and reading texts.
