No government grants for Orthodox Church Music Days in Hajnówka

Polish Orthodox Church

28.02.2010

The stronger proposal won – as the Minister of Culture explains why the Orthodox Church Music Days in Hajnówka didn’t get the money this year.

Resort granted 20 thousand. PLN for the organization of Orthodox Church Music Festival, which takes place in Bialystok and is not related to the Orthodox Church in Poland. Festival in Hajnówka last year got 40 thousand. PLN. This year will not receive anything. Minister of Culture Bogdan Zdrojewski says that decision was based on the opinions of critics.

Choice was, either not to support any of the projects, or try to identify the festival which is stronger. The difference in assessments of the two festivals was small – says Bogdan Zdrojewski.

Ministerial decision means that the festival in Hajnówka will be more modest. It was planned for 40 choirs, we will unfortunately have to reduce that number – says priest Michal Niegierewicz, the organizer.

However Minister of Culture points out, that it is still possible to appeal against the decision. The final resolution will be made in early March.

Just wanted to add some basic info about grants. It is tough to acquire grants to start a small business. Contrary to the myths that some perpetuate, the government and even private foundations rarely give grant money for a for-profit small business.
