Conference on ‘Dogmatic Unity and National Specific Features of the Church Painting’ held in Bucharest

Church of Romania – May 2015

On 4 May 2015, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania opened the working session of the national conference entitled “Dogmatic unity and national specific features of the church painting”. The event is held at “Dumitru Staniloae” National Centre of Continuous Formation of Bucharest. The theme of the 3rd edition is the “Activity of the church painters”.

The Patriarch of Romania spoke about the “Byzantine iconography – normative frame for the present church painting”.

“The Byzantine iconography is in accordance with the Byzantine Orthodox Liturgy having been the liturgical pictorial vestment of the liturgical space in which the liturgy is celebrated. If the Orthodox liturgy is celebrated in a field and several architects are called to present a project for the architectural vestment of this liturgy, we shall reach the Byzantine style. Painting is not a simple ornament, but a participatory element in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy”, the Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church said, according to Trinitas Radio station.

During the two days of the conference priests, professors, painters and specialists will deliver lectures on the activity of the icon and church painters.
