Medvedev hopes new Serbian Patriarch will promote ties with Russia

Moscow, January 25, Interfax – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated Bishop Irinej on being elected the new Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Kremlin reports.

“Your high authority among believers, your great pastoral experience does not leave any doubts that you will duly carry out your mission as the Primate of the Church. I hope that following the example of Patriarch Pavle and many other predecessors you will make an important contribution to the cause of strengthening the centuries’ old brotherly ties connecting the peoples of Russia and Serbia,” the message of greeting says.
