Solovki Monastery to be Restored – Kremlin Official
Moscow, January 25, Interfax – Russia’s government plans to start restoring the Solovki Monastery, which was one of the GULAG prisons in the Stalin era, the Kremlin property manager said.
“It’s a unique monastery, it’s our history, it’s a monument. It needs comprehensive restoration, just as, for example, the Valaam Monastery or the Iver Monastery,” Vladimir Kozhin told the Ekho Moskvy radio.
It is being under discussion “how the state and donors would participate in this work [financially],” he said.
“I hope that this year we will jointly develop such an arrangement [arrangement for financing the project] and will start this work,” Kozhin said.
He said there would be a form of commemoration at Solovki of those who died there during the years of Josef Stalin’s rule, a “terrible page in the history of the country.” “This memory must be perpetuated. I think we will find a way of doing this,” he said.
