Clerics condemn killings in Egypt

Around 30 members of Canada’s Coptic Orthodox clergy gathered in a Scarborough church this week to write and issue a statement condemning the killing of eight Coptic Christians in their homeland on Jan. 7.

The attacks at Nag Hammadi, Egypt are “part of a whole gamut of other incidents” of discrimination and violence against Christians happening in Egypt, and which the Egyptian government takes no strong measures to stop, said Rev. Fr. John Ramzy. St. Mark’s Coptic Church on Friday.

“We just want just action (in response) to this event and other events,” he said.

Copts are going to special memorial service, which Scarborough-Agincourt MP Jim Karygiannis will also attend, from 3 to 5 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 17, Pearson Convention Centre on Steeles Avenue and Airport Road.
