Mar Ivanios laid to rest

Geevarghese Mar Ivanios, 72, Metropolitan of the Kottayam Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church, was laid to rest at the St Baselios Monastery (Mar Baselios Dayara) in Thattinpuram on Saturday. Catholicos (emeritus) Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Didymos-I and the reigning Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II led the funeral services.

Members of the Episcopal Synod, along with the priests and faithful, attended the function held at the Mar Baselios Dayara where the Metropolitan had resided for about two decades. The services commenced at 1.00 pm and ended at 3.30 pm on Saturday. Thomas Mar Athanasios, Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, Dr Yohannan Mar Chrysostomos, Dr Yohannan Mar Thevadoros, Dr Zacharias Mar Aprem, Dr Abraham Mar Seraphim, Dr Jacob Mar Elias and Geevarghese Mar Yulios assisted the funeral services. Union Minister of State for Labour Kodikkunnil Suresh, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Finance Minister K M Mani were among the dignitaries who arrived to pay their homage. Metropolitans Thomas Mar Timotheos and Zacharias Mor Philoxenos of the Jacobite Church payed their respects. Thousands of people participated in the procession carrying the mortal remains of Mar Ivanios to St Kuriakose Monastery, Pampady.
