ROC Priests to Run for Elections
6/10/2012
The governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church has allowed clerics to run for elected office “in the event of ecclesiastical necessity.”
In its October 4 resolution, the Holy Synod said Orthodox clergy may participate in elections in exceptional situations where “action is needed against non-Orthodox forces that are seeking to use elected office to fight the Orthodox Church.”
The resolution said, however, that clerics will not be allowed to be members of any political party even if they run on a party ticket.
The document also said the Synod has the power to decide on the lists of possible candidates.
