Patriarch Kirill proposes establishing Russian language centers, libraries and websites worldwide

Moscow, November 3, Interfax – Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia proposed a set of measures to study the Russian language within the Russian-speaking communities worldwide.

“The Russian language is an important element of communications within the Russian world. We should take our best efforts to maintain and expand this common heritage,” Patriarch said Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the 3rd Russian World Assembly in Moscow.

According to Patriarch, the Church, the government and public organizations should join their efforts to provide the environment for preserving the Russian language and promoting Russian culture within the Russian-speaking communities abroad.

Patriarch Kirill believes that it may be possible to put together libraries in communities abroad, including Orthodox parishes in other countries, establish centers for studying Russian, promote publishing of periodicals, and launch Russian-language websites.

Besides, Patriarch Kirill mentioned that the Russian culture initially had an inherent ability to combine other national traditions and that “the spirit of xenophobia, chauvinism and inhibiting other nations’ traditions is alien to the Russian culture.”
