Metropolitan Abraham Mar Seraphim appoints Fr Cyril as Student Chaplain Priest for Bengaluru City

BENGALURU: His Grace Dr Abraham Mar Seraphim, Metropolitan, Bengaluru Diocese of the Indian Orthodox (Malankara) Church, has appointed a full time Student Chaplain Priest for Bengaluru city.

Fr Cyril Varghese, a graduate of St Thomas Orthodox Theological Seminary (STOTS), Nagpur, has taken charge vide Bull No 64/2012 dated June 17, 2012, signed by Metropolitan Dr Mar Seraphim.

As per the orders, Fr Cyril took charge from July 1, 2012.
Bengaluru Diocese, thus becomes the only Diocese among Indian Orthodox to have such a facility.

The appointment is in tune with Dr Mar Seraphim’s report on youth ministries, especially those outside of Kerala in India which was submitted to the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Indian (Malankara) Orthodox Syrian Church at its meeting in Devalokam, Kottayam, Kerala.

The report submitted in February 2012 had obtained clear support from the Holy Episcopal Synod which underscored the need to promote and financially support the MGOCSM Student Chaplaincy programme. The programme was for student ministry in major metros not just in India but abroad was well.

As a new appointee, Fr Cyril will be responsible for organizing visits to professional colleges in and around Bengaluru city. He will also be responsible for organizing Orthodox students who come down from various parts of India to pursue their higher education.

Fr Cyril will also conduct Holy Eucharist, prayer meetings and other spiritual meetings. This would however, depend on granting of permission from the college authorities. He also will prepare an index of students with details who are studying in Bengaluru city.

Dr Mar Serphim has in the Bull urged all parents of students studying in Bengaluru city to contact Fr Cyril and provide him with full particulars.

The Metropolitan has also requested all vicars of the Diocese to contact Fr Cyril.

Fr Cyril, a young priest, was born in Chunakkara in Kerala’s Alleppy District and hails from ‘Vadakadathu’ House. Blessy is his spouse. Those interested can contact Fr Cyril Varghese at:
