BEIRUT: Three Lebanese men suspected of robbing and vandalizing the Greek Orthodox archdiocese last week were arrested Monday and investigations will continue before any charges are leveled against them, a security source told The Daily Star Monday.
The source said information about the suspects is being kept confidential at the request of the Internal Security Forces and the Greek Orthodox Church.
The source said, however, that the three men are likely members of a criminal gang and their action did not appear to have a sectarian motive. “The three of them belong to different Lebanese sects,” the source added.
Thieves broke into the Greek Orthodox archdiocese in Ashrafieh sometime early Wednesday morning, stealing money from a safe and vandalizing church property.
Hours after the crime was discovered, ISF personnel sealed the area, preventing anyone from taking photographs before evidence and fingerprints were collected.
