The government of Azerbaijan will help complete an Orthodox Christian church in Novi Sad and renovate the Bajrakli mosque in Belgrade, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Serbia Eldar Hasanov has stated.
He told Tanjug the work on the church dedicated to Parascheva of the Balkans and the mosque will begin soon.
The goal is to have both buildings opened simultaneously during the conference on intercultural dialogue between Serbia and Azerbaijan, said Hasanov.
There was an idea to build a church for refugees in Novi Sad, but the project was halted due to a lack of funds, he remarked.
He pointed out that after the visit to Belgrade by Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev in June, it was agreed to improve the two countries’ cooperation in economy, culture, science, education, humanitarian projects and so on.
It is a result of good relations between the two presidents, Hasanov added.
The aim is to start a new page of peace cooperation, dialogue, tolerance and understanding, he stressed.
The Azerbaijani authorities have already funded the renovation of the Tasmajdan park in Belgrade and the statue of the most famous Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov (1885-1948) in Novi Sad.
Azerbaijan has also sent humanitarian aid for refugees and orphans.
