The General-Prosecutor has ordered the Coptic Church to deliver Camelia Shehata for questioning.
Shehata is the wife of a Coptic priest who was allegedly held hostage by the church after she converted to Islam. She has been at the centre of controversy, especially among Salafists, who have repeatedly held demonstrations against what they claim is the Coptic Church’s abduction of a Muslim woman, and demanding her “release”.
Yesterday, thousands of Salafists held a protest in front of the cathedral in Abbasiya, the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch, and only left when they were promised by the head of the military police that Shehata will be brought forth within 15 days.
