2020 Romfilatelia Christmas stamps show National Cathedral mosaic of Virgin Mary
Basilica News Agency – Aurelian Iftimiu – 18/11/2020
Two special stamps have been issued by Romfilatelia for Christmas this year, with the designs telling the story of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and the Nativity of the Lord through mosaic icons.
The stamps see Virgin Mary receiving the good news of Christ’s incarnation from the Archangel Gabriel and Mary cradling the new-born Jesus in the iconostasis of the National Cathedral in Bucharest.
Romfilatelia released the stamps at post offices nationwide on November 12.
The images are framed in a golden metallic border. The word “Crăciun 2020” (Christmas) appears in red lettering across the side.
“The Mother of our Lord occupies a central place in the worship and iconography of the Orthodox Church, due to the fact that she is the one who gave birth in the flesh to the Son of God and also the first human being who achieved the purpose of the Incarnation – the deification of man,” Romfilatelia wrote in its description of the stamp issue.
The stamp of the imperforated souvenir sheet reproduces the image of the Mother of God with Baby Jesus, as depicted on the iconostasis of the Romanian people’s Salvation Cathedral.
The stamp of the imperforated souvenir sheet has a silver replica, displayed in a special thematic album.
Romfilatelia thanked His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel for ‘the documentary support given to the development of this postage stamps issue.’
