The 17th annual General Conference of the Interparliamentary Orthodox Assembly is under way in the Armenian Parliament. It has brought together about 60 delegates from Latvia, Romania, Greece, Russia, Albania, Georgia and other countries.
The Assembly is an inter-church and an inter-religious meeting, but it has a political pretext, as well.
Historian Babken Harutyunyan does believe that the assembly could play an important role in many aspects. In his opening remarks the historian today presented the role of the Armenian Church in the development of the Armenian statehood.
According to Babken Harutyunyan, the meeting could help the Orthodox countries, which have not recognized the Armenian genocide to accept and recognize it. At the same time, he says the meeting could be helpful in the process of international recognition of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.
Within the framework of the conference representatives of Christian churches discuss why clashes occur between Armenian and Greek clergymen in Jerusalem, why the Armenian and Georgian Churches conflict, etc.
