13 Christians Kidnapped in LIbya Released
Earlier in December seven Egyptian Christians were kidnapped. They are still missing. According to reports from the BBC, they were abducted by masked gunmen in northern Libya. These are the latest incidents in a series of attacks on Egyptian Christians in Libya.
According to the BBC, there was also an attack on the home of an Egyptian Coptic doctor in Sirte in early December in which he and his wife were killed. Local reports said the 13-year-old couple’s daughter was found dead after being abducted.
Libya is home to a very large community of both Muslim and Coptic Egyptians, with most working in the construction sector. The country has been plagued by instability and infighting since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
A pastor in Libya asks believers in the West to pray for “all those who are Christians in the country, especially the Coptic Christians who have become immediate targets.”
In 2014 a dozen Christians were killed in Libya, which is ranked No. 13 on the 2015 Open Doors World Watch List of the worst persecutors of Christians. The 2015 rankings were released yesterday.
