100 Serbian Icons on Display in Belgrade

23/4/2011

Orthodox icons, which have always presented a striking illustration of the division lines between Orthodox and Catholic Christianity, now come again under the limelight in a new exhibition, opened this week in Belgrade. A hundred icons, dating from different historical periods, are displayed at the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences (SANU), and will remain there, open to public, till 19 May.

The oldest amongst the exhibits date from the middle ages and come from the monastery of Žica in Central Serbia, and the newest – from our times. Their sequence offers a peak in the history of drawing in the Balkans, including an insight into the 19th century academic movement – a period, when the religious images belonged more to museums than to churches.

Part of the exhibition is dedicated to historical characters and events through the centuries– from the coronation of King Peter First of Serbia, aka Petar Karađorđević in 1903, to NATO’s bombing of Serbia in 1999.

Failing to avoid political statements, the exhibition is organized by SANU Gallery and the Serbian History Museum in cooperation with the Serbian Orthodox Church Museum and the National Museum in Belgrade.
