Coptic Church Rejects the Schism in Ethiopian Church

Official Statement by the Ecumenical Relations Committee of the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church

Cairo-Egypt: The Ecumenical Relations Committee of the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church rejected the new schism which arose in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church under the leadership of Abuna Sawiros by consecrating around 26 Bishops uncanonically at Woliso Bealewold (The Nativity of Christ) church, Oromo and installation of himself as the patriarch of Oromo. The Ecumenical Relations Committee published a statement regarding the same on 24th January  2023.

H.G. Anba Thomas, Metropolitan of Qusia & Mir the rapporteur of the Ecumenical Relations Committee in the statement said that the Coptic Orthodox Church does not recognize any ordination outside the scope of the legal patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, only Abouna Matthias 1 is recognized as the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Tewahedo Church and declared solidarity with the Ethiopian Church.
