Wildfires Rage in Bulgaria, Stara Zagora Fire Threatens Homes, Church Calls for Prayers

OCP News Service – 16/07/2024

Sofia – Bulgaria: Eastern Bulgaria has been battling wildfires since July 13th, with the most concerning blazes burning in Sakar Mountain near the southeastern towns of Topolovgrad and Ivaylovgrad. These fires have consumed an estimated 6,500 hectares of land.

Another major fire, located just 3 kilometers west of Stara Zagora city, has grown significantly and now threatens populated areas. Authorities have declared a partial state of emergency in Stara Zagora to secure additional resources for firefighting efforts. Evacuations have been reported near the blaze as strong winds and dry conditions hamper containment.

Bulgaria has requested international assistance, and two helicopters from the Czech Republic are on their way to aid firefighting efforts. Forecasts predict continued high fire danger due to hot, dry weather and strong winds.

In the midst of this crisis, the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church – the BOC-BP – has issued a call for prayer and support. Deeply concerned by the devastating fires, the Synod urges Bulgarians to pray for those battling the blazes and the victims who have lost their homes.

The Synod specifically calls upon the faithful to pray to the Mother of God – the Blessed Mother of God, to the holy great martyr Marina and the holy prophet Elijah, the patron saint of firefighters. Their prayers are sought for God’s protection over the people of Bulgaria, shielding them from further calamity and keeping them unharmed.
