Patriarch John X and Greek Prime Minister Discuss Syria’s Challenges and Regional Stability

Balamand- Lebanon: On December 16, 2024, His Beatitude John X, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, received Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, accompanied by a Greek governmental delegation, at the Archdiocese of Beirut and its Dependencies in Ashrafieh. The meeting was attended by His Eminence Elias Audi, Metropolitan of Beirut and its Dependencies.
The discussions focused on the longstanding historical ties between Greece and the Church of Antioch, as well as the current challenges in the region. Topics included the aftermath of the war in Lebanon, the ongoing developments in Syria, and the broader challenges facing the Middle East.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece’s unwavering support for the Church of Antioch and emphasized the importance of preserving the Christian presence in the Middle East. He also underscored Greece’s commitment to strengthening the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon as part of efforts to stabilize the region.
His Beatitude Patriarch John X highlighted the need for solidarity during these difficult times, calling for unity and cooperation among all parties. He stressed the urgency of electing a president in Lebanon and emphasized the importance of joint efforts to rebuild the country across all societal and community levels.
Addressing the situation in Syria, Patriarch John X underlined the Church’s steadfast role in supporting its people amidst ongoing challenges. He advocated for lifting the sanctions on Syria, noting their severe impact on the Syrian people, and emphasized that Christians remain a vital part of Syria’s national identity.
Both sides agreed on the pivotal role Greece can play in fostering peace and stability in the Middle East, particularly amidst the dynamic changes unfolding in the region.
