Addis Ababa- Ethiopia: On Friday, July 12, 2024, the Acting Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church declared a week of fasting and vigils for monks and nuns in particular, and the faithful as a whole. The fast and prayer vigils are set to take place from July 29 to August 4 for seven days.

The decision to observe the week of fasting and vigils comes at a time when peaceful living in some parts of the country is disrupted by various issues including armed conflicts. The Acting Synod hopes that through fervent prayer, God will grant lasting peace to the nation, love and unity for the Church, and salvation for the people.

The declaration was made after requests from the Union of Monasteries, who believed that spiritual intervention was needed to address the challenges facing the nation. In addition to calling for fasting and prayer, the Acting Synod has instructed the faithful and servants not to travel to monasteries during the week of vigils to avoid disrupting the monastic communities, who will be fasting until dusk.

The Synod also emphasized that believers should observe the fast and prayers while continuing their day-to-day activities.
