Bulgarian Patriarch Thanks Armenian Counterpart for Support on Religious Law

Sofia – Bulgaria: His Holiness Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil spoke by telephone with Catholicos Karekin II, Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church, on January 31, 2025. The conversation centered on the recent amendments to Bulgaria’s Law on Religious Denominations.
Patriarch Daniil expressed his gratitude to Catholicos Karekin II for a letter sent on January 14, 2025, in which the Armenian Church voiced its support for the Bulgarian Orthodox Church-Bulgarian Patriarchate (BOC-BP). The phone call reaffirmed the Armenian Apostolic Church’s stance regarding the debated amendments to the Law on Religious Denominations.
Catholicos Karekin II reiterated that the Armenian Apostolic Church makes no claim to the term “Orthodox” and recognizes the BOC-BP as the sole representative of the constitutionally recognized Eastern Orthodox faith in Bulgaria.
The two religious leaders emphasized the traditionally strong and positive relationship between the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Armenian people. The conversation highlighted the continued fraternal ties between the two churches.
