Bucharest-Romania: The full iconography of the Romanian People’s Salvation Cathedral (National Cathedral) was solemnly consecrated on Sunday, October 26, 2025, by His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I and His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The event, a major manifestation marking the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate and the 140th anniversary of its autocephaly, was attended by over 8,000 clergy and believers, as well as two heads of state: President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova and President Nicușor Dan of Romania.

Patriarchal Words of Unity

In his address, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I expressed joy at returning to Bucharest, emphasizing the “ancient and steadfast mutual love and appreciation” binding the Churches. He highlighted the consecration as a sign of unity and commended the Romanian Church for its historic anniversaries and the recent canonization of four Venerable Aghiorites of Romanian descent.

Patriarch Daniel, in turn, thanked the Ecumenical Patriarch, stating, “The presence of His Holiness Bartholomew I… is a testimony of unity in Orthodoxy and of the constant support of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the administrative freedom and dignity of local Churches.”

Guests from the Cathedral and the faithful can worship at the Holy Altar starting immediately, with the cathedral remaining open day and night until October 31 to accommodate all believers. The events continue on Monday with the celebration of the feast of St. Demetrius the New, Protector of Bucharest.
