Oromia – Ethiopia: In a shocking act of violence, Tesfaye Reta, an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church priest at the Gedebsa Debre Selam Holy Savior Church, was brutally murdered on the evening of Saturday, June 28, after celebrating the annual feast of the Virgin Mary. The priest’s life was tragically cut short as he faced the grim reality of a community plagued by attacks targeting Orthodox Christians.
The incident occurred around 7:30 PM, casting a shadow over the local community that has already endured considerable suffering. Priest Tesfaye Reta, a widower and father of seven, was mourning the loss of his wife to the same assailants a year and a half prior. Compounding his grief, his 11-year-old son has been left wounded by gunfire during previous attacks in the locality.
Despite the risks, the Priest chose to remain in Robe District, dedicated to his mission of safeguarding the Church (located 16 kilometers south from Robe town) and serving his congregation amid escalating violence. Reports indicate that the targeted violence against Orthodox Christians in the region has been on the rise over the past several years, instilling fear and uncertainty within the community.
Tragically, the violence did not stop with the Priest’s murder; his brother also faced threats and was the victim of an arson attack that destroyed his home. As the community mourns the loss of their beloved priest, there are calls for justice and safety for those who remain.
The gruesome details surrounding the Priest’s death have left many in shock. In a somber gathering, what remained of his body was collected and laid to rest at Robe St. Mary’s Church on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
