Romanian Orthodox Archbishop Nathaniel Popp to be Honored
29/9/2010
CLEVELAND, Ohio –A three-day celebration honoring the Romanian Orthodox archbishop of North America for his 30 years of service will begin Friday in Cleveland.
Archbishop Nathaniel Popp will be among hundreds of people from across the continent expected to gather at St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral on Warren Road. It is the oldest Romanian Orthodox parish in the United States, established in 1904.
The event is part of the 78th annual conference of the North American diocese, which includes 125 parishes. The diocese is headquartered in Jackson, Mich.
“The archbishop has jurisdiction from the North Pole to Mexico,” said the Rev. Remus Grama of St. Mary’s. “For 30 years, this man has truly been an apostle, travelling millions of miles by car and by plane to shepherd his flock.”
Grama said Popp, 70, has been a big advocate of unifying Orthodox churches in America. The Romanian Orthodox Church is part of the Orthodox Church of America, headquartered in New York and comprised of Russians, Romanians, Bulgarians and Albanians
Conference meetings will be held at a Holiday Inn on West 150th Street. The public is invited to a liturgy service at 9 a.m., Saturday, at the church, 3256 Warren Road.
