Many paintings, icons burn in fire at Grabar Center

Moscow, July 15, Interfax – Several paintings and icons stored on the third floor of the Academician Grabar Russian Art Research and Restoration Center at 17 Radio Street in Moscow have burned in a fire, a policeman told Interfax.

The fire has fully destroyed the third floor. Although the flame is contained, the interior is still ablaze. The firemen are spraying water but they have not put out the fire so far.

The fire alarm at 17 Radio Street sounded at 1:13 p.m. Moscow time, a source at the Moscow Emergency Situations Department told Interfax.

Three Ka-32 helicopters are currently trying to put out the blaze. In all, 248 firemen and 65 pieces of machinery are involved in the operation.

The fire started in the attic and the roof and spread across an area exceeding 1,500 square meters.The fire is rated three on the five-point scale. The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry has confirmed the deaths of two firefighters who were putting out a blaze in Moscow.
