Addis Ababa – Ethiopia: Church of Saint Mary (Dugaya Maryam) was vandalized by ultra-nationalist Protestants on the 30th of March 2022. The 110 years old church, is located in Dugaya in the former Gumayde district of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region of Ethiopia.

A group of Protestants entered the Church shouting “Jesus is Lord”. The saboteurs, (known s Consitas locally), removed the roof of the church and destroyed holy vessels after taking what they could. They also set ablaze homes and crops of the farmers living nearby. The clergy were forced to leave but returned after the faithful secured the church and the region. The area has seen a rise in conflict recently, according to a report by the Ethiopian Human Rights Council (published on 2nd of April 2022).
